Most recently Bondi Beach held a protest to stop India-based Adani going ahead with the coal mine, which is set to be one of the biggest of its kind in the world.
Australia just sweltered through the hottest September on record, with the hottest days more than 16 degrees warmer than the average. Right at the time we need to take substantive climate action, Adani's coal mine would take us in the wrong direction.
It is absolute insanity to endanger our world heritage Great Barrier Reef and to promise Adani our precious ground water for 30 years!
It is indeed utter risky madness to risk the reef, wildlife and all the jobs generated by it, for a mine, which probably won't generate many jobs and will destroy one of the most amazing ecosystems in the world! The people who decided to go ahead with this are letting not only the Australian people, but the entire world down. This has created a heavy disappointed in the Australian government.
This movement has exposed allegations of lies, corruption and bribes. The recent 4Corners investigation into the Adani Group company makes it clear this is a bad deal for everyone except the corrupt billionaire Gautam Adani.
There are a billion reasons not to hand out this money. Here's one: in the 4Corners episode a mother who lives in Vasco, Goa, India, described life near the coal port: "My youngest son gets up in the morning and vomits up coal."
